15 Sep 08 Blackberry 8820 OS Upgrade 4.5.0.52

Officially, AT&T (as well as other carriers) has not released the newest Blackberry operating system 4.5.

At the time of this writing, the lasted OS was 4.5.0.52.

There are many reasons to wait until AT&T officially releases the newest operating system. Problems stemming from no-boot issues, losing all your data and or long hours of reconfiguration. But with the new enhancements (html email, improved media player, online streaming, edit office documents, etc) we couldn’t resist.

These steps are provided as informational only, if you are not experienced with updating/configuring your phone’s operating system or options, I would wait until your carrier officially releases the upgrade.

To upgrade your Blackberry 8800 series to the newest OS you must follow these steps.

First, you must download the newest OS for your series Blackberry. There are a lot of sources for downloading these operating systems. Currently, the latest operating system for the 8800 series is 4.5.0.52.

Once you have downloaded the operating system, you must download the newest Desktop Manager from RIM’s site.

Before you begin, BACKUP YOUR DATA.

Install/upgrade your blackberry desktop manager on your PC. The new version 4.6 will automatically upgrade/reinstall over a previous version of desktop manager.

Next, run and install the new blackberry operating system. This is a simple exe file that will install the operating system libraries and files needed on your PC.

Next, go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\Apploader and delete the vendor.xml file. This file needs to be deleted to inform desktop manager about the upgrade.

Next, connect you BlackBerry device to your PC and desktop manger will start informing you that an upgrade is available. Follow the prompts to upgrade your device to the newest operating system.

Total upgrade times have been between 45minutes to 1 hour. Please be patient and continue with the upgrade until completion. Canceling or stopping the upgrade process will cause longer undesirable results.

If you are running a BES server, you will have to upgrade your server to 4.1.6.10. This will allow you to receive html emails.

Also, be sure to resend your service books from your Blackberry Internet Service login. This will update the option (which you will have to set) for HTML.
